Buying a learner legal
scooter
So you have decided to
get a scooter, good decision!
You have chosen one of
the most eco friendly and fashionable methods of transport around, they
are fast, fun and cheap to run.
As a learner you will be
allowed to ride a scooter up to 125cc, providing you are over 17 and
have a valid provisional license.
Some people opt for a
50cc scooter, that's ok but they are fairly limited in their speed and
power. A steep hill comes along and you can drop from 30mph to 15 mph,
leaving a lot of annoyed drivers behind you, probably tooting their
horns in annoyance.

A 125cc scooter on the other hand has plenty of power, many can reach
speeds of 70mph and have plenty of torque to get you up those steep
hills.
Just because a 125cc learner legal scooter can reach 70mph, doesn't
mean that you have to go full speed. You can instead make the choice to
stick to 40mph and you will still have the extra power there if you
need it.
A 50cc scooter is ok if you live in a non hilly area and only travel
short distances. If your weight is quite low then a 50cc scooter may be
good enough for you, but it doesn't usually hurt to have the extra
power of a 125cc, just incase you need a bit of extra speed in a tight
situation.
As a learner, you will be legally required to put L plates on your
scooter, you will also be required to pass a CBT test, which stands for
compulsory basic training.
Different types
of learner legal scooters
There are two main types of learner legal scooters. These are the
automatic scooters, and the geared scooters.
Automatic scooters are referred to as "twist and go", these are the
best kind of scooters in my opinion and are very common nowadays.
Geared scooters can include the Vespa brand scooters and the Honda
c-range or CUB scooters.
Nowadays the twist and go scooters have become the more popular and you
don't get many geared scooters. The current twist and go scooters are
great value for money, unbelievable value in fact, a brand new learner
legal scooter can cost as little as £599.
How do I know I
am getting value for money?
Some people are a little apprehensive about the low price of brand new
learner legal scooters, that's understandable. The reason why these
scooters are so low in cost is because they are made by a little know
manufacturer, they have to keep their price low to compete with the
more famous brands such as Suzuki and Yamaha.
Interestingly enough, when Japanese motorcycles started being released
in the west, people used to refer to them as "cheap imports". Now,
Chinese scooters are also being called "cheap imports", even though the
quality is high, the prices are low.
Now is the time to get a brand new, learner legal, Chinese scooter, the
quality to price ratio is unmatched by any well known brand named
motorcycle company.
I know from personal experience that Chinese motorcycles get a bad
reputation which they don't deserve. Sure, the early models of Chinese
scooters had some problems, but these problems have been fixed, helping
Chinese scooters to become one of the best value methods of transport
available.
